We’re launched.
If you build it, they will come. Well, maybe. It’s tough to get sailors out on the water routinely, let alone get them to participate as a collective. But that’s the goal.
Those who are passionate about the sport have a duty—to promote it, to make it easier for others to get out on the water, to make a day out on the water worthwhile, and to ensure that there are opportunities for others. I love solo and doublehanded sailing. Through this Society, I’m planning on doing what I can to help others love it too.
The first initiative is the LIS Shorthanded Series Trophy. It’s new. It’s experimental. So we’ll see what happens. You—the sailor—don’t need to do anything. Just go out and race. Patronize local yacht clubs. Show up at the starting line. Get in the miles. And if you qualify at the end of the season (4 local starts, 6 total starts), the trophy recognizing the best of the best could be yours.
The first shorthanded event on the calendar is The Edlu, hosted by Larchmont Yacht Club, on May 9. But maybe a shorthanded class will materialize at the Spring Regatta hosted by American Yacht Club on May 1-3.
See you out on the water.
